Has social media changed the way in which we communicate for the better?

Here are two fantastic TED talks in which Jon Ronson and Sherry Turkle discuss the impact of social media on the ways in which we communicate in the 21st century.

Jon Ronson: When online shaming spirals out of control

Sherry Turkle: Connected, but alone?

What do you think of the way in which we communicate with each other now? Has social media had a positive impact?

prior to watching the ted talks I had a general understanding of the efficiency media provides to communication however media was also in my mind a very controversial topic.

Ronson mentions the impact social media platforms ability to misrepresent and ruin people’s experiences of general appearance in the public eye, further more the protection that social media provides to perpetrators of such an act through hiding their identity the lack of perceived barriers or restrictions on what we can say this leads advertising to represent “trending” suffering of people as a way to draw attention and in turn drawing our attention away from the moral acts of crisis caused by media.
To add to this the concept of cancel culture being advertised and used as an attention grabber.

This in turn pushes people away from comfort in and prevents the concept of freedom of speech taking effect.
